Hidden Rodents

While hiking in the Sibbald Flats area part of Kananaskis Country recently, we came across this well maintained beaver dam that includes a beaver lodge seen in the photo.

At this time of the year the beaver are surviving by hanging out in the lodge and eating the supply of food available having elevated the water levels with their dams to allow them to store food underwater and keep it safe beneath the winter ice where they swim out of the lodge to access the food under water.

I plan on returning in the spring to shoot photos of the residents swimming in their pond.
