Alberta Ghost Town
While checking out less travelled roads in the Drumheller area, I decided to check out this old elevator that I'd visited once before, but in the winter time, and at the time I promised myself to return at a later date in the summer, although it took 4 or 5 years to make it happen.
This P&H elevator (Parrish & Heimbecker) is located just east of Carbon AB on the abandoned CPR Langdon Subdivision, which extended from Langdon into Drumheller and beyond. The branch here originally came through in the early 1920s and was abandoned in the late 1970's.
Seen here just west of the elevator are the remains of the original railway bridge. The concrete piers are still standing as seen in the photo. It’s likely that the spans were removed when the line was abandoned, either to be used elsewhere on the railway, or to be sold for scrap.
I was pleased to see the elevator still standing, but a close examination of the elevator shows how it continues to deteriorate since I last saw it. who knows how long it will continue to stand. Also located nearby are the remains of other old buildings including cellars but not much else.
