Canada's Highest Road
One of my favorite drives in Alberta is through the Highwood Pass located on highway 40 part of Kananaskis Country. The road climbs to 2,206 meters (7239 feet) and is the highest paved road in Canada. Over the years I have travelled this road many times beginning in 1971 when the road was an all gravel rough & dusty drive before Kananaskis Country (1978) existed. All these years later I am still in awe of the impressive surroundings of the mountains at their finest that make the drive memorable.
The road will soon close as is the norm from the first of December to mid-June to allow for the migration of wildlife in particular the elk herds that winter in the area. When my wife and I drove it recently, there was already two feet of snow that had fallen at the summit of the pass about 20 kilometers ahead in the photo. With slippery sections of the road near the summit, I was glad to have the benefit of 4 wheel drive in my truck for our drive.
