Along The Way

I shot this photo on the Stoney First Nations reserve located west of Cochrane while passing through early morning just after sunrise recently. The ponies caught my eye, always love the ponies found on the different reserves located across southern Alberta.
I do feel more connected to the Stoney reserve, as all those years ago, I spent one summer working on the Stoney reserve employed by Mobile Oil while we were doing exploration work in the area.
I worked on the survey crew part of the larger crew, and our Stoney guide showed us all the best areas on the reserve, and in fact we camped out many nights over the summer while we were doing exploration work.
Our guide was a skilled artist who painted scenes depicting earlier times amongst the Stoney, and while visiting his home, he showed us some of his work, stunning to say the least. Years late he became a chief of the Stoney.
His paintings depicting early life on the reserve are highly valued and sought after today.
