Along The Way

The Early Years
Several years ago my wife Rolly spent three weeks in Europe where she visited our friend Mira who along with her sister own an Inn located on the Baltic Sea in Poland where Mira spends her summers helping her sister run it.
While there they toured around Poland by train, and along the way they visited a cemetery where some of Mira's relatives are buried. Rolly said that the cemeteries in Europe are like a park setting with beautiful flowers growing everywhere. These cemeteries are treated like parks, with many people spending time there visiting and just hanging out.
Fast forward to a beautiful fall day here in Calgary, and while out driving, I showed Rolly one of my favorite Calgary cemeteries that being Union Cemetery. This cemetery dates back to Calgary's beginnings when Calgary's downtown didn't exist as we know it, but was a gathering of houses and a few business places bordering the Bow and Elbow rivers.
The cemetery was located a mile out of town in the rolling grasslands to the southeast of the town. I have seen a photo of Union Cemetery when there wasn't a tree to be seen anywhere. The entrance to the cemetery was located on top of a grass hill off in the distance with a trail for horse drawn carriages to access the cemetery.
Needless to say the view of Calgary seen from Union Cemetery has changed somewhat over the years.
