Under the Cover of Darkness
Todays elevators seen dotting the prairies like the Viterra elevator seen here are a marvel of engineering.
Up until the 1960,s the typical wooden elevator that dotted the landscape were built using the cribbed method of construction, and the finished elevator possibly held from 25,000 to 40,000 bushels of grain.
Today's concrete elevator is built using the slip-form method of construction, where a continuous concrete pour is used to build the typical elevator such as the Viterra elevator.
The modern concrete elevator has a capacity of 30,000/50,000 tons, the equivalent of of 1 to 1.5 million bushels.
Today's elevators can fill a grain car in 10 minutes, and complete filling a 125 car unit train in one day.
