Wild Species
CPR Mascot
So I'm driving a backroad in Banff Park, and I spot this Grizzly chowing down on grain escaping from passing trains along the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) rail-line, grain that comes from grain cars in trains on their way to the coast.
Now there is a on going battle between Banff Park and th CPR, as the park battles to save the bears from getting run over by trains, while the bears feed on the grain they find lying .on the ground where passing trains have spilled it.
It was easy to tell this male grizzly was familiar with passing trains, as that is what has his attention in this photo (not me fortunately!), as a freight train is making its way up the track to where the grizzly is feeding on grain.
He waited till the west bound freight train was about 100 meters away before he moved off of the track.
Even a Grizzly Bear knows he is no match for a CPR Locomotive, and when its time to give up the right-of-way!
Just so you know where I stand on this, I find it sad that these majestic animals are being put in danger in their quest for an easy meal provided by passing trains, instead of foraging for food in the wild as they were meant too.
I realize that the rail-line is staying where its at, as it passes through the mountain parks on the way to the coast, but you would think that the railroad could clean up its act to the point that their grain-cars were not constantly losing grain along the railine endangering wildlife along the way.
