The Pika
The Pika known by various names including rock rabbit, is found throughout the mountains of BC and Alberta.
I shot the photo of this guy in a rock slide located just below the summit of the Highwood Pass located in the Kananaskis Country area of southern Alberta.
Pikas are versatile feeders, eating most plants in their habitat. As they do not hibernate.
Pikas gather cuttings of preferred plants, cure them in sheltered, sunny places, and store them among rocks for winter use.
Pikas are tiny, and could fit in your hand, giving you an idea as to their size.
They are really cute and comical to watch as they rush about gathering up grass for their winter feed.
