Pileated Woodpecker
I recently caught this male Pileated Woodpecker busily chipping a hole in this cottonwood tree.
The Pileated Woodpecker is our largest woodpecker, and roughly crow-sized with a 24 inch wingspan.
It was fascinating to watch him at work.
If you look close, you can see the wood chips flying.
Its interesting as to how he has anchored his tail feathers against the tree to stabilize himself while going about his wood chipping.
