Not The Momma
There are ugly babies, and then there are Coot (cute) babies!
When it comes to water-bird chicks, the Coot chicks are world champions in terms of colorful babies. They have bright red beaks, bright red bald heads and red and orange plumage until they are about 2 weeks old
Actually, all babies are cute, some just need more getting used to than others!
There's one thing about it, this momma Coot won't get her chicks mixed up with the Mallard chicks living in the same pond.
The 4 chicks shown here with their mom, were just just born in the past week, as I have been watching the nest, waiting for the chicks to hatch out. They are still to young to take to the water, but the way the adult coots are feeding them leechs, it won't take long that they will be out and about on the slough with mom and dad.
Don't you love just those crazy green legs on the mom Coot!
