Trails Across The Prairies
Spring 1858
Early morning finds me on a ridge that overlooks the Bow river valley, with the distant Rockies shimmering on the horizon.
Along with me on this morning is my 45 caliber blackpowder caplock rifle that I made in my workshop. Being I'm a lefty, I made it with a left-handed percussion lock assembly as seen in the photo. The rifle features a walnut stock, the barrel with a hooked breech-plug is 29" long with a 1 in 66" twist making it a ball shooter.
I also made the components that a blackpowder rifle requires, including the powder horn and various other accessories like the capper and powder measure, as well as a short-starter, lead balls and patches that are carried in the leather possibles bag as seen in the photo that is slung across my shoulder with the powder horn riding just above it.
