Trails Across The Prairies
The Prairie Crocus
A crocus poking its brightly hued head through the snow is known to trigger frenzied joy in those who feel perpetually winter-afflicted.
Many of us including myself look to the appearance of crocuses as the first sign that spring is but a nanosecond away.
Every spring at this time of the year, I keep an eye on this piece of natural prairie for the first Crocus to put in an appearance, today was that day.
For the record, the crocus is all of 3" in height, so a lens with macro capability is beneficial to get up close and personal for life-size images. My camera was sitting on the ground, approximately 4" away from this crocus.
A set of extension tubes will also work with most lens if you don't have a lens with macro capability.
This was a quick and dirty shot with natural light, whereas if your real serious about macro photography, you'll want to add reflectors and several flash units, although a single ring-flash works well.
