Trains and Such
This gallery has been one of my most successful to date for purchases of my photos.
Poor Man's Drone
Besides shooting photographs of trains, I also enjoy other types of photography, one involving shooting photos of ham radio projects that I can be found working on at one time or another, including building antennas that I have written construction articles on for ham radio publications.
My vehicle referred to as a "mobile" in ham radio circles has a lot of radio equipment including antennas on board. One of my recently built antennas called a "log-periodic" is being tested while mounted on the top of a fiberglass 25' push-up mast that mounts in the receiver of my mobile for operating from a stationary location.
Having shot a lot of photos of this setup from the ground, I thought it would be nice to shoot photos of it from overhead. Giving it some thought, I came up with a camera mount that attaches to the very top of my push-up mast at the 30' level.
So long story short, it worked out quite well, so I then thought "why not shoot photos of trains with this setup."
The photo seen here was shot with one of my Fujifilm mirrorless cameras mounted up top, the camera being controlled from the ground with my iPhone running a Fuji app communicating with the camera through a wifi network.
The app allows for live-view, on-screen focusing, ISO, aperture, and other settings. I also have had one of my DSLR's up top, controlled with a RF handheld controller, although I do not have live view available with that set up.
This photo was shot as an empty eastbound grain train passes by the Viterra grain terminal located on the Brooks sub just east of Indus AB.
The experimentation continues....
