1/3rd scale Case Hay Press
Believe me when I tell you that I was kept busy finding the pinnion and ring gears that you see visible in this photo. The ring gears are 12 inches in diameter, and I ended up finding them along with the pinnions and the belt pulley in Cremona Alberta. Being this hay press is a 1/3rd scale model, you multiply times 3 and you can see that the full size gears are 3 feet in diameter. I have seen the full scale hay press under operation and it is quite impressive to watch.
The gears I used for my hay press were originally used on a pump-jack for pumping water on a water well. The outer drive gears on the left side were purchased from "Boston Gear". You will notice the lack of panels over the gears and pulleys which was typical of machinery at the time.
The wheels were another interesting build, although the building was straight forward, it was aquiring the outer wheel rim material that was interesting. I thought that a pipe outlet located in the Foothills Industrial Park area of southeast Calgary could possibly be a source of material.
So one fine day, I drove over to the yard and inquired if there was the possibility that they could possibly have the material that I required to build the wheels for my model hay press. One of the guy's said "Sure, no problem". He then proceeded to move a 20 foot length of 12 inch pipe with a fork-lift over to a huge bandsaw across a road in another yard. The whole time I am sweating bullets, thinking what this is all going to cost.
It takes a hour to do the sawing of the 4 pieces that I required, and more sweating by me meanwhile. A hour in total goes by before it is all said and done. At that point I ask "How much", and he replies " How does twenty bucks sound", I couldn't get the twenty bucks out of my pocket fast enough.
The 1/3rd scale decals that you see on the model were supplied by a firm located in Michigan, that advertizes in "Old Gasoline Engine" magazine.
