24-PDR Coehorn Mortar M-1838
I have been wanting to add a Coehorn Mortar to my collection of Artillery models for some time, and I had been admiring this particular Coehorn in the pages of 'Field Artillery of the Civil War'.
The drawing included in the chapter on mortars includes the full size dimensions for a 24 PDR Coehorn mortar, making it a simple task to scale it down to a size suitable for a display model.
I decided that 1/4 scale would make a nice size model, and that's what you are seeing here..
The full size Coehorn weighted 300 pounds with the included bed, and 4 men were used to move it, although for a short distance 2 men could handle it.
The barrel on the original full sized Coehorn was cast from bronze, and the bed was made from wood with wrought iron fittings.
I will make the wood bed from either oak or walnut, and once this mortar is finished the finished it should be a very nice display model.
The following photos show some of the steps it took to turn a 2.125" X 3.375" length of brass bar-stock into the Coehorn mortar barrel.
