Wood Working with a Metal Working Milling Machine
Yep, you can use a vertical milling machine meant for metal working to do a little wood-working, and although not ideal, it gets the job done for small jobs such as this one.
This is the bed for the 24-PDR Coehorn mortar taking shape,
and at this point I am inletting the top of the bed to accept the barrel trunnion.
Normally the bed for the coehorn mortar would have been made from oak, but because I had a some 1" thick walnut material in my shop, and after cutting out the 4 pieces required, I laminated the pieces together forming the bed for the mortar.
This bed will contrast nicely with the brass barrel once it is finished and receives a clear oil finish.
Once the bed is inletted and I have done the final fitting up of the barrel, I will make up all the iron hardware required to finish the mortar.
