17 Meter Really Rugged Coil Selection
The various 17 meter HF really rugged coils that I've built in my shop over the past six months, and then I have been running tests with them mounted on my mobile.
You may be interested to know, that these coils all have the same inductance value of about 4uH, although with different length to diameter ratios.
Yet some of these coils have only half of the amount of same gauge wire wound on their respective coil forms, compared to some of the other 17 meter coils included here.
I designed and built all of these coils, to have the same inductance values, but beyond that they are not created equal, with their varying form sizes, as some rise above the others in performance.
Over the past months, I have confirmed through test results, that when it comes to antenna coils, that size or in particular the length to diameter ratio of the coil, the diameter of the wire, and the spacing between the turns of wire, does make a difference if your striving for a coil with a higher Q rating.
