The Mobile Recording Studio
Seen here is my portable sound recording system, sometimes used for recording sound files that are used by themselves, and at other times used to record sound while shooting video with my DSLR when connected directly to my camera, or the sound recorded seperatly and added while editing the video on the computer.
I have different choices for microphones, my stereo mics shown here that I built from scratch, initially starting with a matched set of mic elements that I then built housings for them in my workshop.
Although I was handholding the stereo mic array on this day while recording passing trains, I also have a mic tripod that I can place the microphones at some distance away if I need to.
I also have a shotgun microphone that is highly directional, and must be pointed directly at its target sound source for proper recording, but the sound is highly enhanced.
Then there is always the option of using the recorder by itself with the built in microphones.
If your not familiar with "dead-cats" that's what the furry covers over the mics are called, to keep wind gusts from adding over-driven wind noise to the sound recording.
The foam blocks seen with their composite mounting assembly is to keep separation between the left and right microphones. This is my final build after at least three other assemblies that proved somewhat successful in my quest for perfect separation. In actuality, this assembly is similar to how your ears on either side of your head hears, only better.
If you're observant, you'll be able to tell that the mic elements are mounted 120 degrees apart from one another and as to where they are pointed.
To isolate the mics from mounting noises generated by hand holding the array, a Rycote vibration-resistant Lyre mount is used seen positioned between the microphone assembly and the handle assembly.
Now although I was recording passing trains on this day, I also will use this recording system for recording nature-scapes, wildlife, concerts, well pretty much anything that makes sound.
