Here is a snapshot of one corner of my latest creation, that being an additional module I've added to my existing HO Industrial Switching Layout.
The photo finds me working on the finer details of the service platform that is of course used for servicing the locomotive switchers that work in the yard.
Only weeks ago what you see here had been a bare plywood top with the tracks in place but nothing else. Once I had the pit turntable, buildings, and fueling depot built
and in place, the work turned to landscaping the layout.
Once the ballast was laid on the ties, I followed that up with different sizes of gravel spread throughout the rest of yard. I then turned to weathering the yard to give it the appearance of having been in service for many years.
My favorite method of weathering is with weathering powders made by Monroe Models. These weathering powders will make rolling stock, buildings, vehicles, figurines, well pretty much everything look old, dirty, rusty, and faded, and generally worse for wear after being exposed to the elements of weather, travel, pollution, and mechanical wear and tear.
I probably use about 6 of the different colors the powders come in that I have in my selection of powders while weathering, and also will blend several different colors to get the colors I feel I need. To apply the powders I select and use from about 6 different sizes of sable brushes depending on the requirement at the moment.
While working with the powders, if you don't like the results, the powders may be removed with a damp cloth. However once I am satisfied with the finished product, I will then seal the powders in with my air-brush using clear flat acrylic paint.
The weathering and work on this new addition continues.
