The Ship Yard
With fall making itself known recently, I have begun spending more time at my modellers bench building. If your up to the challenge, you may want to try your hand at building a miniature sailing ship in a bottle as I am doing at the moment.
So way back at Christmas time 2020, my daughter surprised me with a 1:300 scale replica kit of a 3 mast sailing ship called HANNA, an armed American Schooner that sailed the waters off of the US in 1775.
The catch is that the it is a miniature ship in a bottle that has to be built from scratch before being put on display inside the bottle that came with the kit.
The hull is built up from wood and has many brass fittings and detailing like miniature cannons that sit on the deck once complete.
Having always admired ‘ship's in a bottle,’ and always wanting to try my hand at building one, but having not attempted this before, I'm finding that besides skill patience is required, and I suspect more so once the hull is sitting in the bottle, and the masts and sails need to be raised into their final sailing position.
For the record this is a highly detailed kit made in Italy where many of the finest scale miniature model sailing ships are produced.
So far it's proving to be a challenge, but nothing I haven't been able to overcome. Well, back to work.
