The Heart Within
I like watches and in particular analog watches that have mechanical movements. Its interesting to me that there was a time in the past before computers and electric watches existed that all watches had a mechanical movement to power them, possibly by winding them daily or if they were of a higher quality they had an auto wind mechanism as my watch seen here does, the tension on the main spring known by the small hand just visible on the dial.
Today you have to pay dearly to purchase a watch that has a mechanical movement that all high end watches have such as well known brands like Rolex.
This brings us full circle to the watch you see here on my arm that is close to 75 years old and at one time belonged to my grandfather. I remember as a kid seeing this watch on his arm that he wore for years. When he passed I gave no thought to the watch and had long forgotten about it until years later my aunt gave the watch to me.
The watch did not function when I received it so I took it to a watchmaker who tore it down and rebuilt the movement. He also replaced the crystal that was in bad shape. The watchmaker left the dial and outer housing as is with the many years of patina seen that in my mind adds to the history of the watch.
Today although I own many watches (including my dad's watch), I enjoy wearing my grandfather's watch on occasion reminding me of a distant time when watches were built by watchmakers to stand the test of time.
Its worth mention that while wearing a 75 year old watch, I’m out with my 40 year old Nikon FM film camera shooting slide film.
