Field Day..... It Begins
With Field Day happening on June 24-25th, I decided that for a change of pace from my operating FD out on the grasslands of southeastern Alberta, that this year I would do something different.
One of my favorite haunts is Kananaskis Country located along the front ranges of the southern Alberta Rockies, and so I decided that I would operate Field Day from a location in K country.
Not only that, but I would leave my mobile behind, and I would hike up to a location that would be perfect to operate from with my manpack consisting of the Yaesu FT-897D and its companion 10-60 meter home-brewed antenna.
With a beautiful start to field day shaping up, I headed out reasonably early, allowing me time to make the drive out to the Kananaskis valley, where I left my mobile parked in the Kananaskis lakes area.
The hike up to the location that you see here, took me just over an hour, but you have to admit the location is perfect for playing radio, and if the bands were to go dead, there was always the scenery to fall back on.
Once I off-loaded my pack, I soon had everything set up and when 12 noon local rolled around, I was good to go.
The bands proved to be in good shape, and spending most of my time on 20 meters, I was able to log many stations from my location on the summit of this small peak called "Canadian Mt Everest Expedition" located overlooking the lakes area of the Kananaskis Valley located in the southern Alberta Rockies.
On and off I had visitors stop by, as the hike up to the summit of "Canadian Mt Everest Expedition" is quite popular with hikers, with the summit dedicated to the spirit of the 1982 Everest expedition, which saw the first Canadian set foot atop Mt. Everest.
Today this was the summit of my Mt Everest operating location while operating Field Day.
If my photo and description of the Kananaskis region has you looking for more of my visits to the region, check out this link that is for some of my visits to K Country.....
