VE6AB Portable Ops
Look Up.... Way Up
With this location in mind before I left Calgary for setting up my portable vertical antenna, there was no problem seeing the horizon in all directions, as I was set up on a high Butte over looking the Red Deer river valley and the badlands of southeastern AB.
That's the Ghostown of Dorothy below my mobile, and off in the distance on the horizon is the Hand-Hills south of Hanna AB.
There is a steep drop off located about 2o feet from where I am parked, with the Red Deer river located below the butte I am parked on.
While I was working 40 meters with my portable setup consisting of my Yaesu FT-897D and my 10-60 meter vertical set up on frozen ground.
The Kenwood TS-480HX mounted in my mobile and paired with the SCS Tracker, was keeping me connected to the network on 30 meters via RPR HF APRS.
At the same time my APRS weather station VE6AB-8 mounted in the cargo bay of my mobile, was also connecting to the FM APRS network, and displaying the weather for my location just south of the ghostown of Dorothy AB.
I had a enjoyable time making a number of contacts on 40 meters with good reports on my portable station.
This location would be the perfect Field Day location.
