VE6AB Mobile Ops
Mobilinkd
NOTE..... The 2015 May issue of QST features my article "APRS In Your Pocket" based on pairing an Android powered smartphone via bluetooth with a Mobilinkd TNC and your favorite HT.
In the photo I just sent an aprs message to my aprs weather station ABWX, that you can see mounted in the back cargo bay of my mobile, enabling the digipeater.
The electronics for my weather station are connected to a Argent Cable OT3m tracker with a externally mounted GPS receiver, making up the complete package for my ABWX mobile weather station.
There are several ways to make changes to these two devices including connecting my laptop directly via a USB cable, or in this case I am utilizing my smartphone paired via Bluetooth with the UV-3R/Mobilinkd TNC in my left hand, to command the digi on via APRS messaging.
After sending the "cmd digi on" message via the keyboard of my smartphone, ABWX responds with a aprs message sent back to my Mobilinkd device confirming that the digi has been enabled.
The digipeater as well as my HT's use a custom path setting so that the digi is not accessible by anyone but myself, as not to cause un-wanted digipeating on the APRS Network.
This is a lot quicker than using the laptop, and besides I can access ABWX via aprs messaging no matter where I may be as long as I have my smartphone/Mobilinkd device with me.
When I leave my mobile behind, whether it may be that I'm going hiking, or just in to Starbuck's for tea, or.....well its a given that I won't forget to take this very capable handheld Mobilinkd station with me that fits in my pocket and keeps me connected.
