VE6AB Mobile Ops
Headed Out
As soon as I was sure that my Kenwood D72 - VE6AB-7 was being seen on the map, I was ready to head out, as I had activated the Argent cable OT3m paired with my APRS mobile weather station VE6AB-8 located in the cargo-bay as a digipeater.
I had a custom path set in both devices allowing my HT to easily connect to the network via my APRS weather station while I was away from my mobile, as I would not be in a good enough location for a distant digipeater to hear my VE6AB-7 beacons directly allowing me to connect to the APRS network.
With my Yaesu FT-897D with its internal batteries stored in my pack, and my antenna case on the tail-gate, I was ready to head out.
I actually planned on operating my portable HF station on the edge of a bluff overlooking McKinnon Flats, a natural area located about 35 kilometers southeast of Calgary, and about a kilometer south of the location of my mobile in this photo.
Normally I could drive down the switch-back into McKinnon Flats, however at this time of the year the winter-gate that allows access down into the valley is closed for the season until April 1st.
This natural area is still available to be explored on foot at any time of the year.
