Elk On The Rocks
I was out of the house bright and early, like 2 hours before sunrise, and with the plan to shoot wildlife photos, earlier is better.
By the time sunrise happened, and although there were cloudy skies in abundance, I was in the Rockies and found this herd of Elk just after sunrise grazing along this backroad.
I had a good morning out and about, and although I didn't get to do much radio work, it was still quality time well spent.
In case you are wondering what the handeld is that is sitting in the cup-holder with coax attached to the antenna connector, that is a Kenwood TK-D340 DMR transceiver, and interestingly enough I could hear the DMR repeater in Calgary from my location near Bow Valley Provincial Park.
When I keyed the PTT, I was getting a connected response from the repeater. The distance was approximately 80 kilometers as the crow flies, and that was with 4 watts of power.
Goes to prove that a better antenna is the answer, and in this case the antenna is a Larsen 2/70K that resides on the rear deck of my mobile and is connected through a Daiwa antenna switch, as I also use this antenna for my APRS weather station mounted in the cargo bay of my mobile.
I also have another 2/70K mounted on the front cowl for my Kenwood TM-D710A,

The elk were quite co-operative on this morning with photos captured as they went about feeding near my mobile as seen in this link photo....

While I was out and about I was operating RPR HF APRS on 30 meters, and laid this track.....
