VE6AB Mobile Ops
The Operator's View
This photograph giving you a birds-eye-view of the operators position in my mobile, is to describe through the use of this photograph how I designed and built and then installed the radio-stack, to allow for a heads-up display without impeding the operators view outside of the vehicle while underway.
If you notice the positioning of the radio-stack in conjunction to my eyes, I never lose sight of the road ahead of me if it is required that I glance at the radio-stack, not unlike checking the status of the instrument panel gauges while underway.
It is by design that my radio-stack is the same height as the instrument panel gauges, allowing the operator's eyes to move across the instrument panel from left to right as well as taking in the radio-stack displays in one continuous sweep, and still being fully in command of the vehicle and seeing on-coming traffic and other goings on outside of the vehicle.
My original thoughts on the matter while I was coming up with a design for my radio-stack, was to keep one from resorting to looking down beneath the top of the instrument panel at radios mounted down low on the console and losing sight of the road ahead.
I see many transceivers mounted that way creating an un-safe situation (distracted driving) if you resort to checking the display of a radio while underway, not a uncommon occurrence.
So bottom line is....when planning on how you are going to mount that transceiver in your mobile, take the time to design a mount that allows you to be fully in command of your vehicle without endangering yourself, your passengers, or other vehicles you are sharing the road with.
Stay safe out there......Jerry
