VE6AB Mobile Ops
Backroading Lighting
As you know, I don't leave home without my cameras while going down the road playing radio.
It's a given that I love to combine the two together, and at any given time, I may stop for a photo-op such as this one.
When shooting in to the sun as I am doing in this photograph, take care with your eyesight, as you do not want to look directly at the sun while composing the shot in the viewfinder of your camera, as you can damage your eyesight (even causing blindness)!
While composing a photograph with the sun in the viewfinder, be aware as to where the sun is without looking at it directly.
If you have a DSLR you may also have the option of shooting in liveview (composing the photograph on the rear LCD), probably a better choice when composing photographs with the sun in the frame.
Wide angle lens are better (safer) to use for this type of photograph than using a longer focal length lens.
Besides, wide angle lens gives you a nice sunburst, where-as a longer focal length lens makes a sunburst more challenging to accomplish.
The other problem you run up against when shooting in to the sun, is your main subject (my mobile) being underexposed.
To alleviate the problem and the technique that I use or used in this photograph, is to use a electronic strobe as an artificial lighting source.
I had my strobe pointed at the tailgate of my mobile, and adjusted 3 stops over to keep the tailgate detail from being lost in the shadows.
You can see the effects of my strobe on my HF antenna, as well as on the corner of the bumper and the body of my mobile.
Now I could have edited this out in Photoshop, but the photograph is what it is, a cool photograph shot without any additional work required beyond the camera and lens, the sun, and the electronic strobe of course.
Like I said.....photography is all about the light!
On any given morning......
