VE6AB Mobile Ops
Sunrise - The Southern Alberta Rockies
Well technically I guess you could say that my mobile and I are located on the eastern slope of the Alberta Rockies, as I am not quite within the Rockies themselves in this photo.
The shadows pretty much tells the time of day, with the sun having just climbed over the range of hills behind me, as the long shadows created by the low lying sun to the east point the way west.
In this photo, I have just shouldered my daypack loaded with what I need to head up-country to check out where a herd of Elk are hiding out, as I heard them bugling a few minutes earlier, and I was hoping to maybe get some photos of them.
With the recent rain lower down on the plains, it was a given that there would be snow happening on the high reaches of the Rockies, and you can see what remains of the snow lying on the rocks in my photo from a few days earlier.
Its still early in the season, and this snow will melt away before the snows of winter return.
Still, this is the time of the year that reminds the wildlife like Elk and Bighorn sheep that it time to descend out of high pastures, and visit the valley bottoms where the females of the species will gather with the beginning of the rut happening.
Although I didn't manage to find that elk herd, I did mange to photograph some fine looking Bighorn rams.
Before leaving my mobile behind, I set up my dual-band FM transceiver as a fill-in digi, and I had my handi-talkie with me that although not capable of being heard by a distant digipeater on it's own, but with the help of my mobile pushing my beacons forward, I was being positioned on Google maps in case I didn't return home at the time that I had said to my wife that I would.
Anyway, I spent an enjoyable morning out hiking in the high-country, and plan on returning soon, as the colors will begin to change soon making the eastern slopes of the Rockies more spectacular yet than on this morning.
Oh......here's one of the photos that I captured of some trophy Bighorn rams......
