VE6AB Mobile Ops
Whiteout Ops
Canadian winters are beautiful, and the only way they get better is when there is a good old-fashioned prairie blizzard being created by snow driven before the wind blowing out of the northwest as it was on this day. The temperature sitting at -21 Celsius before the wind chill was factored in adding to the thrill of it all.
Of course I couldn't let this one pass without hitting the road with my cameras along to record the goings-on being created by the NorWester creating whiteout conditions across southern Alberta, as the potential for unique photos that normally don't happen during more normal winter conditions are created on days like this one.
It wasn't without its challenges, as shooting photos outside while your being buffeted by the wind and snow can make things interesting not only for your own comfort, but the camera being tossed about on the tripod needed a steadying beanbag hanging beneath it to keep the images from going south.
Now lets be clear that I have all the necessary survival gear loaded in my mobile that I require, if the worst came about and I ended up stranded for whatever the reason.
Also you need to take care while driving in whiteout conditions, as you may meet other vehicles on the road, and that may be hazardess to your health, if you or the other driver has lost his bearings, and one of you may be driving down the wrong side of the road!
On this day I had no problems with other traffic on the road, as everyone other than myself was staying home, don't know why with the potential for great photograph's waiting to be shot.
It goes without saying that I was spinning the VFO on my HF rig, in between snowflakes being driven before the wind enveloping my mobile, when not outside shooting photographs that is!
Ya gotta love it!
