VE6AB Mobile Ops
Robust Packet Trains
With band conditions as of late improving, and my mobile running RPR (Robust Packet radio), my beacons were being heard and decoded by HF gateways located across North America, some of the stations located in Kansas, Kentucky and Virginia on this morning placing the track for my mobile chasing trains on google maps.
In the photo, I'd chased train 114 up from Calgary, and after a 120 kilometers, I'm pulled over waiting for train 114 pictured to pass train 442 parked just out of sight in this photo.
The conductor of train 442 is seen standing nearby waiting to reposition the switch once train 114 passes train 442.
I was being entertained by the chatter on my scanner, as my mobile was the topic of conversation between the engineer's of the two trains.
The engineer of train 442 saw me pull up at Perks, and radioed train 114 to tell him about the Avalanche with the big antenna parked near train 442.
The engineer of train 114 told him that I'd been shooting photos of them all the way up from Calgary. I'm sure they knew I was listening to their conversation.
