VE6AB Mobile Ops
Emergency Preparedness - Special Ops
I was involved in a mock disaster exercise held in High River Alberta recently, to see how well prepared we were in case there possibly was a repeat of last years floods, although that is being referred to as a 1 in 200 year event.
This mock disaster exercise was actually implemented by the Canada Task Force 2 (Can-TF2), based here in Alberta, and is an 'all-hazards' Disaster Response Team with a diverse capacity to respond to a variety of man-made and natural disasters.
The Foothills Amateur Radio Society (FARS) was one of the groups participating in this exercise. Besides the normal FM voice mode of communication, we also utilized APRS messaging for this exercise. With the EOC control station utilizing computer over radio running APRSIS with included mapping, and with the mobiles in the field configured in the same manner, APRSIS with keyboard messenging over radio proved to be a very reliable mode of communication.
This photo shot in Longview along the Highwood River, shows Tammy VA6TSS reporting back to the EOC located in High River in real time via a computer running APRSIS/32, in combination with the Kenwood TH-D710A mounted in the radio-stack.
As they message back and forth, they also have a birds-eye-view in real time via the map depicted on the screen of the computer as to their locations.
Since this excercise took place, I have added more capability to my mobile in the form of an APRS weather station, that may be seen via the Internet or APRS capable radios like the Kenwoods and Yaesus.
Here is a descrition of my mobile weather station VE6AB-8.....
