VE6AB Mobile Ops
Multiband or Monoband
The gearmotor antenna shown here on the back cargo deck of my Avalanche, has proven to be the best of the various gearmotor antennas that I have designed and built to date.

I designed and built a 17 meter monobander for my mobile, as a fun way of allowing these two antennas to go head to head, proving as to which would come out on top as the better performer on 17 meters, my favorite HF band.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I thought possibly that the 17 meter monobander would prove to be the better performer of the two antennas.
So after several months of having both antennas mounted in turn and in place on my mobile, and after running many tests with both antennas, I have to give the edge to my 17 meter monobander antenna.
Now I should also say that I actually built 5 different 17 meter coils before my final design that tipped the balance in favor of the 17 meter coil that I now run on my mobile which is part of my new RRC "Really Rugged Coils Antenna System" as seen elsewhere on my Mobile Ops gallery, as well as on my Antenna Werks gallery.
Here is my final 17 meter coil design....

Still, there are advantages to both antennas, as the convenience of pushing a button to select 17 meters on my gearmotor antenna is very desirable when going down the road.
My RRC antenna system is quite desirable as well, as the various coils that make up this antenna system will take a lot of punishment, when I am backroading and not paying attention to low growing trees and other hazards of the road.
Bottom line, I don't leave home without either my 10/80 meter gearmotor antenna or my RRC antenna system.
