DAWN THREADER PHOTOGRAPHY - Jerry Clement : Photo Keywords : rockies : Kananaskis Country - the best kept secret in the Canadian Rockies. - There is no finer place in Alberta than Kananaskis Country and I find myself exploring the various areas of K Country every chance I can. The fly fishing in its pristine streams and high mountain back-country lakes is superb. For those of you not in the inner circle, Kananskis Country is the secret playground of the locals, and is located in Southern Alberta. Kananskis Country borders on to Banff National Park, where we allow our visitors to hang out. In 1858 John Palliser a British explorer and his men, crossed through the Kananaskis Pass just a few kilometers to the south in the above photo, while exploring the area in search of a pass through the mountains to the pacific.

McBride Lake Wind Farm - Southern Alberta

I was shooting photos in the McBride Lake wind farm on this morning, and there were wind warnings out for this part of Southern Alberta! This area located just west of Fort Mcleod is a haven for wind turbines such as the ones in my photo. I had problems shooting photos with the gusting winds! Expand the photo and look at the antennas on my truck being whipped about by the wind! I saw one gust of 140 kph on my anemometer! The highest recorded gust speed recorded by Enviroment Canada in this area of Alberta on this day was 148 kph!

Castle Mountain -Bow Valley Parkway - Sunrise shot of Castle Mountain from the banks of the Bow River, that I shot on a stunningly beautiful morning at the end of October, when I visit Banff National Park after the visitors have gone home!

One of the most imposing peaks in the Bow Valley, the bold, castellated southwest front of the mountain dominates the view for much of the journey from Banff to Lake Louise, its bulk, and reddish colour combining to make this a favourite of many who pass this way.
Two levels of steep cliffs form the "castle" part of Castle Mountain. The ledge between is the Stephen Formation which correlates westward to the rocks that contain the Burgess Shale fossils in Yoho National Park.
Despite the appropriateness of the name "Castle Mountain" and the fact that it had been used for almost one hundred years, the mountain was renamed Mount Eisenhower in 1946 in honour of American General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during the final year of World War II.
The decision to rename Castle Mountain was made by Prime Minister Mackenzie-King on the day before the President was to pay a visit to Ottawa. As much as Eisenhower was respected, this arbitrary decision so enraged the Alberta government that it immediately formed its own geographical names board. It took thirty-three years and an Albertan as Prime Minister before Castle Mountain regained its original name in 1979. As a compromise, the prominent tower on the southern end of the mountain was given the name Eisenhower Peak.

Another beautiful morning along the eastern slopes of the southern Alberta Rockies! I find it amusing that I shot this photo in the roadside ditch of a southern Alberta backroad. I suspect that most people drive right by, and do not see the beauty that surrounds them. When new photographers ask me for advise, I tell them to learn how to see, only then - will you be sucessful in photography.

Early Explorers at Lake OHara

OK so its not in Alberta, although quite close as Lake Louise lies just to the East of OHara a few kilometers. I got to tell you that the Lake OHara region is the absolute no questions asked, the best hiking on the Continent if not the world. I have hiked in the Lake OHara region for more than 20 years and the hiking is breathtaking to say the least.
Check out the mountain explorers Jennifer and Danielle who were about 14 years old at the time this photo was taken. I have fond memories of all the times that I got to hang out with them, whether it was various hikes into Ohara, or camping in Kananaskis, all night looking at the stars through inky black skies, hunting for Dinosaurs at DPP, etc. Today they are older and have moved on, but I still have all the photos that I shot of our adventures together. Thanks girls, it was fun!
