August 1858 finds British explorer, John Palliser and his men in this lovely valley that he would name Kananaskis, as well as the pass they were searching for as a route through the mountains to the Pacific ocean.
The Kananaskis Valley is probably one of my favorite places in the Alberta Rockies. I had left Calgary before dawn with the Kananaskis Valley my destination on this day. I have photographed this scene before, however on this day conditions were such, that I knew I had to re-create a image that would take the viewer back to an earlier time.
Other than the fact that I shot this photograph on Febuary 15 2009, and not August 1858, I can visualize John Palliser and his men camped beside the tiny creek in my photo as they prepare for the push through these mountains and the unknown that lie before them.
