VE6AB Antenna Werks
HF Spectrum
Lately I have become enamored with 17 meters...although I have always loved the band, and there is no doubt it is my favorite HF band while mobile.
Now I have to tell you that I am pefectly happy with my gearmotor antennas, and the performance they are capable of on the various bands that I work, including 17 meters.
However, I was curious as to how much more performance that I could achieve by building a high performance specialized monobander especially designed for 17 meters.
So after spending time with my sketch-pad, drawing and adding what I felt were the required dimensions for a good performing antenna with a high Q coil, I sat down in front of my computer.
After spending time modeling antennas with the dimensions that I inputed in to the software that I use for modeling antennas on the computer, I came away with what I needed to start cutting Delrin and Stainless Steel, and turning the work in my shop, in to a working antenna for my mobile.
I have to tell you its been a interesting time, as I build...test...and switch out the various coils on my test-bench 17 meter antenna mounted on my mobile.
Whats that.....Your asking if I achieved my goal in regards to building a high performance 17 meter monobander....
In a single word...Yes!
